H&M COFI

BRINGING YOU THE INTERNET YOU DESERVE

The Northern Ontario Gigabit Fibre Project is bringing high-speed internet to over 18,000 households, including more than 2,500 Indigenous homes. As one of the largest fibre deployment projects in Canada, it spans 50,000 square  kilometres across 43 communities, including 13 Indigenous communities.

The Legacy of H&M COFI

Connecting Communities and Shaping the Future of Northern Ontario

The History Behind H&M COFI: A Foundation for Connectivity

“H&M COFI”, a name deeply rooted in the history of broadband expansion in Northern Ontario, represents the collective vision and efforts of a group dedicated to improving connectivity for underserved communities. The H&M in H&M COFI pays homage to its roots in Huron Shores and Manitoulin Island. Established to support the development of high-speed internet in rural and Indigenous regions, the not-for-profit corporation played a pivotal role in addressing the digital divide in areas such as Huron Shores and Manitoulin Island.

The partnership between ROCK Networks and the H&M COFI corporation helped establish the foundation for the network that would ultimately serve the communities stretching from Nairn Centre to Garden River FN, including Elliot Lake, Manitoulin Island, and St. Joseph Islands.

The H&M COFI legacy helped lay the groundwork for the current phase of network expansion, which is being fully carried forward by ROCK Networks and its parent company, PomeGran.

Transforming Rural Connectivity in Northern Ontario

This network, designed to provide speeds up to 25 Gbps, will revolutionize connectivity for homes, businesses, and institutions in the region. The new fibre infrastructure will allow multiple Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to operate within an open-access framework, fostering healthy competition and delivering consumers more choice and competitive prices.

PomeGran’s advanced technology, including XGS-PON and 25G PON, will ensure future-proof capabilities for the network, providing the ability to scale for years to come. This commitment to cutting-edge fibre technology will deliver multi-gigabit broadband speeds and offer lightning-fast connectivity, positioning the region to thrive in the digital age.

Set to transform the digital landscape for 18,663 unserved and underserved households, including 2,580 Indigenous homes, this project marks a major leap forward in rural broadband access. Spanning a vast 50,000 sq. km region, this end-to-end fibre network will bring reliable, high-speed connectivity where it's needed most.

Backed by the legacy of H&M COFI and the technical strength of ROCK Networks and its parent company, PomeGran, this initiative is a transformative step toward long-term digital equity and opportunity across the Huron Shores and Manitoulin Island region.

About The H&M COFI Logo

The COFI logo was designed by Linda Finn, a multimedia artist who calls Northern Ontario home—a home in every sense of the word. This is where she first felt connected to the land, connected to the people, and connected to her creative spirit. She is noted for her use of diverse media and a strong sense of design in expressing an idea, so designing this logo was a natural extension of her artistic practice.

“When I am designing a logo or trademark, I make a list of all of the words used to describe the organization. These words are absorbed into my mind, and an idea takes shape through a series of thumbnail sketches. That’s when the magic of computer technology allows me to play with infinite possibilities until the design fits the concept.”    - Linda Finn, Logo Artist
